Since the municipal districts of Llessui and Enviny were annexed, in 1970, and the one if Altron in 1976, the municipal rule is in the hands of the Town Council of Sort. For a long time, the Council consisted of 9 councillors. Due to the increase in the number of inhabitants, in 2007 two more councillors became part of the council, which is now adding up to a total of 11 municipal representatives.
In previous times, there was a Court of First Instance, which was eliminated by a well-known decree, the ‘Decret de Nova Planta’. In the present time, the town Council of Sort is the site for the Registry Office and the Peace Court with limited roles, one of which is the celebration of civil marriage ceremonies.
Sort is also the site of the Consell Comarcal del Pallars Sobirà, since it is the capital town of the county. From 1987, when the Catalan government, ‘la Generalitat’ established the division and county organisation of Catalonia, the management and administration of each of the counties fell on the consells comarcals (literally, county council).
The number of members taking part in a consell comarcal is determined by the number of inhabitants of the county and of its composition (according to the legal modifications in May 2003) and it is distributed among the different political groups as follows: 1/3 of the total number of councillors in the county and 2/3 of the total of voting results.
Once the number of positions for each political group is assigned, the group appoints the people who will be part of the consell comarcal as councillors. These, at the same time, have to unavoidably be councillors of any of the municipalities of the county.
