The Pyrenean town of Sort, in the Catalan Pyrenees, was the venue of the 27th edition of the Wild Water Canoeing World Championships, a historical instance for Spanish canoeing, which was held from the 7 to 13 June 2010. This was the first time the most important worldwide event in wild water canoeing was held in Spain.
The tradition of kayaking and canoeing in Spain and in Catalonia, as well as the powerful bid of the town of Sort for this event made it possible to put forward the candidacy in 2008 and achieve the celebration of the Championships for the first time in history. A testimony that was handed in the closing ceremony of the Championships held in Ivrea (Italia).
In the 2008 edition, held in Ivrea (Italy), 250 athletes from 25 nationalities took part in the Championships; in Sort 2010, many more athletes from 31 different nationalities are expected to participate. In Sort 2010, more than 300 from 31 different nationalities took part in that sport event, breaking an attendance record.
The first edition of this event was held in 1959 in Treignac (France), a town that repeated as a venue in 2000. France was also hosting the Championships in 1969 and 1987, in Bourg St. Maurice. |
