In Catalonia and around Europe, there is a growing number of people who spend their free time doing sport, for leisure or for competition, with more or less intensity in their activities, with the intention of improving in different aspects (learning a new sport, improving technically, physically, psychologically, in their diet, etc.).

In such a definition of tourism many types of athlete are included: from high level professional athletes, who find the best environmental conditions to train in their modality in the Catalan counties, to individual athletes or amateur teams sharing a goal in practising their favourite sport. This is a completely different and new kind of tourism from what we have been considering outdoor tourism, where the predominance is the recreational, leisure aspect and not necessarily the sporty one.

SORT – TOURIST SPORTS DESTINATION OF CATALONIA (DTE)

DTE is a specialized label, awarded by Turisme de Catalunya, which certifies the quality in the offer of sports and tourist services of a certain destination.

The new DTE label is a reference mark for sport lovers in search of optimal places to practice their disciplines. DTE is a quality label, distinguishing the town and villages in Catalonia complying with the most demanding levels of quality in terms of sports facilities, tourist infrastructures, and other complementary services and facilities. In 2006 Sort obtained the label in white water canoeing and kayaking, collective sports and football.
